Good morning Year 5! I hope you have a GREAT day!

Your work is organised into the days of the week below.

Please try your best to have a look at the Maths and English lessons at a minimum for each day of the week. Remember: you choose your challenge. If you want to do a few questions or ALL of them, that's fine.

We all work at different levels, speeds and abilities. You just work to the best of yours!

Afternoon sessions are there on the days we would usually do them in school but you can do them in any order if you want.

Keep an eye out for some videos from me too! The links will be in the lesson presentations.

Don't forget to scroll to the end of the page to see some extra projects like the Year of the Word, Times Tables/Mental Maths websites.

If you find that you are finishing all of the work set, there are other websites if you want to do some extra learning yourself by taking responsibilty of your own learning. :-)

You can send me work or questions you may have to the Year 5 mailbox: year5@st-jo-st.dudley.sch.uk

I promise I am looking at everything that is coming in but I might not reply to each of your emails. I will try and respond once a week at a minimum!

Your independent practice is also on the same PDF document also.

Points for today:

Keep working on your times tables - they are so important.

I am not using the White Rose link but I have included it below if you want to see how they do it after our session. We don't do the area model (or grid method.) You do not have to watch it if you don't want to!

Descriptive Writing

Today, you are going to write descriptive and imaginative paragraphs talking about your first time going to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and your experience of Platform Nine and Three-Quarters. You have received your letter, you have bought everything you need for your new adventure and you are now at King’s Cross Station in London – ready to board the Hogwarts Express!

REMEMBER: You are writing as if it is YOUR first time (NOT Harry’s).

Work you way through the PowerPoint, look and listen to Mrs Hickman's example. Has she included all the elements required?

Finally, it's time for you to write yours! Take your time and it doesn't matter if you don't finish today. You can always carry it over to tomorrow.

Evaluate and Edit your work using the last slide to help you once you are done.

Watch the video below again if you like! It might help you.

PSHE

Maths

Today I would like you to complete a skills check.

Complete all the questions you can and the answers are attached in a separate document. Some of the topics like fractions and volume we haven't covered yet so don't worry if you can't do them!

Please have a look on Education City and complete the Times Tables tasks. Some of them you can only play on a laptop/computer but most of them are tablet versions. Make sure you turn your device landscape.

(If you have completed them, play again and try to beat your score - it is good revision!).

Use the other websites that I have mentioned below like TT Rockstars and "Hit the Button" etc. too.

English - Reading

Have a look at the reading document. You will be given an extract from a book called "Northern Lights" by Philip Pullman. Read pages 3-6 and answer the given questions.

Other Reading Activities this week

-Ask your child to read a chapter from their home reading book.

-Following this, ask your child to summarise the events from the chapter. They could bullet point what happened, create a comic strip or present the information in their own creative way.

-Encourage your child to note down any unfamiliar words from the chapter they have read. Explore the meanings of these words by using a dictionary, reading around the sentence or using print conventions.

-Challenge your child to read something around the house that isn't a book. They can then keep a record of all these.

MORE READING INFO!

Oxford Owl have some eBooks to read. Stage 16 onwards are suited to Upper Key Stage 2.

Topic - Baptism

Do you remember what happened last week?

Today's lesson is all about Jesus' ministry that started after he was Baptised.

After Jesus was baptised, he travelled, preached, taught and performed miracles (this is what ministry means).

Today, you will look up stories of Jesus' ministry. Your task is to complete the grid on the presentation/attached answering:

What did he do?
Why did he do it?
Select the most important quote from the passage (in your opinion) –why have you chosen that one?

(If you haven't got a Bible at home, I have attached the stories on a PDF)

Art

Over the next few weeks, we will be exploring the work of artists who use very ordinary objects and materials to make exciting and imaginative pieces of artwork.

This week, we're going to take inspiration from Italian artist, Giuseppe Arcimboldo He was born nearly 500 years ago and is famous for painting portraits of people, made out of different types of fruits, vegetables and flowers.

Go through the Lesson Presentation and have fun!

The God who Speaks - Year of the Word

Whole School Project

Please use this PowerPoint to use as a family for the Month of January to mark the New Year. The aim of the Year of the Word is to be a special year of focus on the Bible. During this year we are called to explore and celebrate the Word of God through the Scriptures, share the Word with others and respond to the "God who speaks" in the way that we live.

The focus is St. Mark's Gospel, but you can read any passage you wish! The Wednesday Word is an instant way to share Scripture and the meaning together each week.

Please use the slideshow below together, read the Bible, discuss the message and maybe how we can use it in our own lives. It's up to you if you want to share a Bible story every day or once a week. There are also activity ideas for you to complete also!

There is a link to the CAFOD website that has lots of extra resources for children that you can use for the Year of the Word too!
